SI #11

  • My SI:

  • How my self-worth and mental health affects me as a person and representing that through animal symbolism

  • Intention for SI #11:

  • In this piece, I wanted to represent the idea of masking emotions and how one changes personalities depending on the environment and situation around them. This idea resonates with me quite a bit because I often mask the emotions I would prefer not to release. Which often times doesn't work in the long run and leads to future consequences I have to deal with due to the fact that I chose to mask those emotions.

  • Alongside the change in personality depending on where I am. I often change how I act, speak, and interact with the people around me depending on the situation. Almost acting like a person I prefer to be perceived as compared to how I really am. Showing the difference between how I act with people I'm comfortable with compared to those I'm not as comfortable with.

  • Idea for SI #11:

  • I'm wanting to represent this idea through the animal I chose for this piece. For this piece I decided to choose a unicorn, a beautiful mythical animal that is often seen in fairy tales and in fiction. A make believe animal that's meant to be a horse with mythical traits. I chose this animal due to the innocence and beauty its known for as a fictional species. Its innocence and beauty matches the idea I'm wanting to represent within this piece.

  • This image of unicorns matches with the personality and emotions I mask myself with. However, to instead represent the not so innocent and beauty it shows, I'm wanting to show it in a state of vulnerability and lack of purity. Seeing it in a state that's not often seen and or represented within fairy tales and fiction. I'm deciding to perceive and represent the unicorn as hurt and vulnerable within this piece instead of its usual innocence and purity.

  • Questions I Have:

    • Since I'm wanting to show the unicorn in this piece as aching and in a state of discomfort. How else do you believe I should represent this feeling and idea? What should I add to this piece in order for you to feel the unicorns vulnerability?

  • Summary of Intention for SI #11

  • How I mask my emotions and switch personalities and how I'm wanting others to perceive me depending on the situation. While representing this through a unicorn, a mythical species known for its innocence, purity, and beauty as a fictional animal in fairy tales and such. Where we are instead seeing it in a state where these characteristics aren't as represented and perceived.

Intention & Its Connection to my SI:

For this project, I choose to focus on the overwhelming stressful feeling that I often experience whenever I feel as if something not good is about to occur. A feeling that overwhelms me and makes it very hard for me to focus and or think. This feeling usually doesn't hone on one subject usually.

-

I represent this feeling through choosing birds as the main focus of this piece. Specifically ravens and vultures. Ravens are often known for signifying a bad omen and or the feeling as if something bad is coming. They are large and looming. Showing that you need to be warned of a future event that will be coming shortly.

-

While vultures often symbolize and represent the misunderstandings and hasty judgements one experiences. Often being too quick to assume something of a situation and always assuming the worst.

Questions:

  1. What sort of aspects do you believe I should add to this piece? I'm thinking about changing it to have the vulture looming over the raven from a higher angle. Making it even scarier from the angle of the raven.

    -

  2. Do you believe I should alter the intention at all to make it any more interesting? Should I represent the meaning of the vulture and the raven in a different light?

    -

  3. I'm stuck on ideas for my next piece if I'm being honest. Do you have any ideas for any topics and or characteristics I should cover on aspects of mental health and self-worth? Do you have any ideas for any kinds of animals I should focus on? Specifically ones that have special symbolic and or spiritual meanings?

Project Ideation & Progress:

*I'm sorry this isn't really much. I was planning on getting a lot of work done yesterday on this but ended up not feeling well... :(

Intention:

For this project, I'm wanting to focus on the concept of family trauma, and how it impacts ones mental health and self-worth as a person growing up. Family trauma comes in all shapes and sizes but one thing for sure is that it almost always sticks with you forever. Something that will forever change and alter you and your personality.

Idea:

To represent this concept in my project, I choose the rat as my animal for this piece. There have been times were rats ended up getting stuck attached to other rats during times were their grouped together. Becoming attached because of their tails making it impossible for any rat to escape and ending with their demise. This incident is often also seen as a metaphor for the profound otherness and and the difficulties of having to deal with others. Which can also include family.

However, instead of showing them conjoined by the tail to represent the bond within a family. I'm going to represent them as all one being. Having you see that no matter what, you will always be reminded of that trauma.
